This most delightful large French medal shows Jesus blessing children. It is made of silvered brass in the Arts and Crafts style so circa 1900-1910.
The medal measures 1¾”(4.3cms), including the bail, by 1 and 3/8” (3.5cms) across the base. It weighs 14.9 grams.
I think this is a representation of ‘Suffer the little children to come unto me’. The raised and finely sculpted design is of Jesus sitting beneath a tree blessing three children. A woman stands at the back with a babe in arms.
The border of this medal is very attractive with the curving lines of the period.
At the top is a ring and a bail for a chain.
The back is inscribed ‘Archiconfrerie de l’oeuvre des catechismes’ – The arch brotherhood of the work of Sunday Schools’.
In fine antique condition this beautiful medal would make a wonderful addition to a collection. It will arrive in a gift box.
