This really lovely French medal tests as 800-900 quality silver. It is signed by the medallist, Tairac, who worked during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. I date this piece to circa 1910.
The medal measures 1 and 3/16” (3cms) by 15/16”(2.4cms). It weighs 4.7 grams.
The medal celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes who appeared to St. Bernadette in the grotto. The image on the front of Our Lady is incredibly beautiful. She has her hands clasped in prayer as her rosary is wound around her wrist. She is surrounded by the boulders of the grotto and sweet flowers.. Around the top is inscribed ‘Je Suis L’mmaculée Conception’ – I am the Immaculate Conception.
At the top is a bow which incorporates a gilded ball. There is a bail for a chain.
On the reverse is the wondrous scene of Our Lady and Bernadette in the grotto. At lower left is the signature ‘Tairac’.
This beautiful medal is in fine antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
