This beautiful, antique. French. First Communion medal is made of 800-900 silver with 18 carat gold overlay. I am dating it to the late nineteenth century.
It measures 1 and 7/16” (3.7cms) long, including the bail, by 5/8” (1.6cms) across. It weighs 3 grams.
It is an ornate design with engraved columns on either side and charming curlicues at each end with a shell motif. In the centre is an oval with a raised design of a gold overlaid Communion chalice. There is a bunch of grapes and ears of wheat on each side.
At the top is a ring with rather worn hallmarks. However it does test to 800-900 silver quality. There is a solid bail which may be a later addition.
The reverse is smoothly finished with the engraved monogram ’EL’.
In excellent antique condition, this lovely medal will arrive in a gift box.
