This most beautiful French silver medal dates back to the nineteenth century. It bears the French boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 silver quality It is double sided - one side has an image of the Virgin and Child and the other Jesus with His Sacred Heart .
The oval medal measures 1 and 1/16” (2.6cms), including the ring, by 11/16” ( 1.8cms) across. It weighs 1.5 grams.
On one side is a fine, raised image of the crowned Virgin and Child. It is exquisitely detailed. The Virgin stands behind the Child Jesus and looks down protectively. The Child Jesus shows His Sacred Heart. Around them are the words in French –‘ N. D du Sacré Coeur Priez Pour Nous’ – Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Pray for us.
On the reverse is an equally lovely image of Jesus with His Sacred Heart. Around him are the words –‘Aimé Soit Partout le Sacré Coeur de Jesus’ – May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be beloved every where’. There is also a further inscription at the base ‘Chev Dep’. I cannot interpret ‘Chev’ as it may be the maker’s name but ‘dep’ usually refers to a design patented.
The top ring bears the boar’s head mark for 800-900 silver and there is a bail to hold a chain.
This very rare, antique medal is in remarkably good condition and will arrive in a gift box.
