This lovely French silver medal dates to the nineteenth century. It is hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality.
The oval medal measures 1 and 1/16” (2.7cms), including the ring, by ¾” (2cms) across. It weighs 2 grams. Its thin construction is immediately recognisable as from the Victorian period.
On the front is an image of the crowned Virgin Mary and Child Jesus. Mary is standing on a cloud and unusually Jesus has his aems flung wide open as if to embrace the onlooker. Around the edge is the inscription ‘Notre Dame de Sion Tuere Eas’- Our Lady of Sion protect them.
On the reverse is the letter ‘M’ fior Mary intertwined with a cross radiating light. The inscription around it is ‘Archiconfrerie des Mères Chrétiennes’ –Society of Christian Mothers.
The ring at the top bears the French crab silver hallmark and carries a bail for a chain.
This very rare medal shows a few signs of age but is generally in fine condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
