This charming gold filled, French medal or charm celebrates the life of Saint Jeanne of Chantal .

Jeanne of Chantal (1572-1641) was married to the Baron of Chantal. He husband died in a shooting accident and she then took a vow of chastity.

Together with St Francis de Sales, her spiritual director, she founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. This was an order open to the sick and elderly who would not have been accepted by another order. The rules were less rigid and members of the order went out into the community to assist the poor and the sick. Jeanne was canonised in 1769.

This medal is small but exquisitely sculpted. It measures 11/16" (1.8cms) in diameter.

On the front is a fine image of Jeanne in a nun’s habit. She has a strong, beautiful face.

Around the edge is inscribed 'Sainte Jeanne de Chantal'. On the left side is the artist’s signature ‘C Charl’.

At the top is a ring and a bail to hold a chain. The back is blank apart from a maker's mark.

This delightful medal is in excellent vintage condition, showing no sign of wear. The gold is matt and really glows. It will arrive in a gift box.
