This delightful French silver chain and communion pendant both test to between 800 and 900 silver quality. The pendant bears the crab hallmark. I am dating both pieces to circa 1890-1900.
The chain measures 19” (49cms) long and closes with a ring clasp. It has beautiful elongated, scrolling links absolutely typical of the era. Together with the medal it weighs 7.8 grams.
The oval pendant measures 1" (2.5cms) by 11/16" (1.7cms). It bears a raised image of the Holy Chalice with a vine and ears of wheat, symbols of the Communion. The outer edge is pierced with embellishments on four sides. The back is blank for an engraving. The ring at the top bears the crab hallmark.
Together the chain and the pendant make a wonderful necklace to offer at a First Communion. However they can be easily separated to wear differently. They have the soft patina of age and are in fine antique condition. The necklace will arrive in a gift box.
