This lovely French silver (tested to 800-900 silver) medal pendant came to me from France. It is a souvenir of a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, where Our Lady appeared to St Bernadette in the grotto at Lourdes in 1858. I am dating this piece to circa 1900.
The medal measures 1¼” (3.1cms) long, including the ring, by 7/8” (2.3cms) across. It weighs 3.6 grams.
It has a beautifully scalloped shape with a pierced edging. The motifs within the edging are a pair of doves and the lamb of God. On either side are the ears of corn and grape vines representing the Communion. In the centre is an oval with a raised image of Mary. There are flower stems on either side of her.
At the top is a ring which thinned from use and has been soldered to maken it viable which is not noticeable. There is a solid bail for the chain.
The back is blank apart from the indcription ‘Souvenir de ND de Lourdes’ Souvenir od Our Lady of Lourdes.
This beautiful medal is in fine antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
