This quite wonderful, cross pendant was made by the company of J Tostrup of Norway, established in 1832. Jacob Tostrup was a contemporary of the celebrated silversmith , David Andersen, and the other great name of the time, Marius Hammer, trained in Tostrup's workshop. After Tostrup's death members of the family continued the business in both jewellery and silverware.
I am dating this cross to circa the 1930’s or 1940's. It is made of sterling silver with enamel.
It measures 2 and 9/16” (6.5cms) long, including the ring, by 1 and 13/16” (4.6cms) across. It weighs a substantial 14.6 grams.
The cross is enamelled in gleaming black with charming rose motifs. At the top is a ring and a bail.
The back is plain. The base is inscribed with the tankard mark of Tostrup and ‘925S’ for sterling silver.
All the enamel is intact. It has clearly been lovingly kept. This beautiful and quite rare cross will arrive in a gift box.
