This beautiful , small medal is French and hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality. It bears images of St Joseph and the child, Jesus.
It is signed ‘Penin Poncet’ at the base. Adolphe Penin (1888-1985) came from a notable Lyons family of medallists. During the early 20th century he worked in Lyons with Jean-Baptiste Poncet. Penin created the design and Poncet engraved it on the metal dies for stamping. I am dating this medal to circa 1910.
On the front are raised images of St. Joseph with a lily stem in one arm and the Christ child in the other. Fascinatingly Joseph is touching the child’s foot. The images and their clothing are very well defined.
At the top is a ring with the French crab mark for 800-900 silver quality. A bail is attached. The back is blank for an engraving.
In fine antique condition, this lovely medal will arrive in a gift box.
