This small but exquisite silver medal is French and dates to the mid nineteenth century. It honours St Mary Alacoque. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1649-1690)was a French Roman Catholic nun and mystic, who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus after she experienced an apparition.
The oval medal measures 15/16” (2.4cms), including the ring, by 5/8” (1.7cms). It weighs 1.1 grams.
On the front is an image of Jesus’ Sacred Heart surmounted by a flaming cross. Around the edge is an inscription in French – ‘Here is this heart which so loved mankind’.
Just below the ring is the boar’s head, French hallmark for 800-900 quality silver.
On the reverse is an image of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque kneeling before Jesus who is showing her His Sacred Heart.
In fine antique condition this very rare medal will arrive in a gift box.
