This wonderful , French crucifix is hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality with a wood insert for the cross. It dates to the Victorian period.
It measures 2 and 15/16” (7.5cms) long, including the ring, by 1 and 7/8” (4.8cms) across. It weighs 17.4 grams.
The wooden cross is encased in silver. The exquisitely sculpted corpus leans slightly to one side in a realistic pose.
At the top is a ring marked with the boar's head for 800-900 silver quality.There is also a substantial bail for hanging.
The back is inscribed ‘Gethsemanie’ in script. Gethsemane is an urban garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, most famous as the place where Jesus prayed and his disciples slept the night before his crucifixion. Also present is a diamond shaped maker’s mark and a further boar’s head hallmark .
This beautiful devotional piece dates back to the time of Napoleon 111 of France. It is in excellent antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
