This truly beautiful, French silver plated medal of Joan of Arc. It is one of three identical medals that I have obtained from a French source. So if you see it sold there are two more.
The medal is double sided – Joan on one side and Pope Benedict XV on the other. In this image Joan is sainted and we know that she was canonised in 1920. Pope Benedict reigned from 1914- 1922. So it is reasonable to assume that the medal dates to the early 1920’s. It measures ¾” (1.9cms) across and weighs 3.2 grams.
Joan is represented in armour with a strong and resolute profile. She is holding her standard. Her hair is tied back and she has a wreath of laurels on her head. She also has a halo The detailing is lovely. Around the edge is inscribed ‘Sancta Joanna De Arc’
On the reverse is an exquisitely sculpted, raised image of Benedict in his papal robes and scull cap. The edge is inscribed ‘Benedictus XV Pont Max’. At lower left is a maker's mark which looks like a conjoined 'HC' as well as déposé ( registered).
At the top is a ring and a bail.
In lovely condition, this medal would make a wonderful addition to a collection. It will arrive in a gift box.
