This charming French, St Christopher medal or pendant is marked ‘Fix’, a company founded in 1823 with a secret formula for this type of 18 carat thickly gold filled jewellery. It is signed by the medallist, Tairac, who worked during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. This piece bears the date 1917.
The medal measures 15/16” (2.4cms) across and weighs 3.7 grams.
The raised image in the centre is of St Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river. The child got heavier and heavier as he was carrying the sins of the world. The image is exquisitely sculpted. Here St Christopher looks back over his shoulder at the Christ Child. The detailing is wonderful – Christopher really looks as if he is having a hard time wading through the water. The artist’s signature is at lower left on a boulder.
There is a curved ring at the top.
On the reverse are clouds and banner with ‘Christophe Te Protège’ – Christopher protects you.On the plain space beneath this is the maker’s mark and the date it was given’1st January 1917’ .Below this is ‘FIX’ within an oval.
The gold fill on this piece is quite thick and that is why the medal is in such lovely condition. The gold really glows!
This is an ideal gift for a person who travels a lot. This beautiful piece will arrive in a gift box
