This English, sterling silver pin is fully hallmarked for the year 1898. The motifs have a very special significance.
The cross, anchor and heart motifs began to be popular in Victorian times and represent Faith, Hope and Charity. Here they are joined together in a delicate and attractive, stylised way with fine chasing.
First comes the cross, then the heart and finally the anchor. They are joined together with a silver cord swirling from the anchor. Beneath them is a scalloped edge crescent with the words ‘Faith Hope Charity’ in raised lettering.
The pin measures 1 and 9/16” (4.2cms) across the base and weighs 3.2 grams.
On the back is a solid old style c clip. There is a maker’s signature ‘P&T’ for Pearce and Thompson. There follow the English hallmarks – the lion passant for sterling silver, the date mark ‘y’ for 1898 and finally the anchor for the Birmingham assay office.
This very attractive old pin would have been of great religious significance to the Victorians and Edwardians.( From Corinthians 13:13 “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” )
This beautiful pin is in fine antique condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
