This very rare and truly exquisite, gold filled, medal or charm is signed Gicar. Giovanni Cariati was born in Naples, Italy. Cariati engraved medals in France in the early 1900's and signed them 'Gicar'.
The medal measures 9/16” (1.5cms) across.
The theme is Our Lady of Arcachon. Acachon is a resort on the south-west coast of France. So hear you see the richly dressed and crowned Virgin and Child. Mary’s robe is embellished with hearts. Behind them is water and a sailing boat. On their left is a tree whose branches stretch out behind them. At lower left is the signature ’Gicar’. Around the edge is the inscription ‘N.D D’Arcachon’ – Our Lady of Arcachon.
At the top is a ring which bears a maker’s mark and a very slightly deformed bail for a chain.
On the reverse is a ribbon with a spray of lilies. Alongside the initials ‘MF’ have ben engraved.
This most interesting medal only has the slightest signs of age. It will arrive in a gift box.
