This tiny, French medal or charm is silver. It bears the crab hallmark for 800-900 silver quality. It is a souvenir of a pilgrimage to Lourdes in south-west France. It was here that Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette in the grotto in 1853. I am dating this piece to circa 1900-1910.
The medal measures 5/8” (1.7cms) across. It weighs 1.3 grams.
On one side are raised images of Our Lady in the grotto with Bernadette kneeling before her. The background is strewn with tiny fleur de lis, representing France. Around the edge is the inscription ‘Je Suis L’Immaculée Conception’- I am the Immaculate Conception.
At the top there is a ring and a bail. The ring bears the French crab mark for 800-900 silver quality..
On the reverse is a raised image of the basilica of Lourdes, with the background also strewn with fleur de lis
This exquisite medal or charm was professionally cleaned before I obtained it so appears much as it would have done originally. It will arrive in a gift box.
