This most beautiful crucifix was made by Kristian Hestenes of Norway, established in 1904. It is certainly very old and I am dating it to circa 1910. It comes accompanied by an old chain , probably of German provenance which complements it perfectly.
The chain is 27” (68cms) long and closes with a ring clasp marked ‘835’ for the quality of silver. Together with the crucifix it weighs 14.6 grams.
The crucifix measures 2 and 5/8” (6.7cms), including the bail, by 1 and 5/8” (4.2cms).
The arm ends have a lovely swirling decoration and the cross itself has an exquisite barley twist edging. The corpus is beautifully sculpted and expressive.
The reverse is plain silver . At the base is ‘830S’ for the quality of silver and then the anvil mark of Hestenes.
This very rare crucifix by a master Norwegian silversmith is in fine antique condition. It will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
