This wonderful , double sided French medal is in bronze. It features St. Andrew and St. John the Baptist. This signed on both sides by the medallist, Ruffony who worked between 1900 and 1920. I think we can safely say that is an antique piece.
It measures 1 and 3/16” (3cms) across and weighs 11 grams.
On the front is an exquisitely executed image of St. Andrew standing before his saltire cross. St Andrew asked to be crucified on this type of cross so that it was not the same as Jesus’ cross. You will note that St. Andrew’s right hand clutches the top of the cross. Beneath this are the words in French ’Saint André Apotre’ – St . Andrew Apostle’ and on the opposite side is the signature ‘Ruffony’. Around the edge is the reference to the Diocese of Bordeaux and Bazas.
At the top is a ring in the shape of a ball and a large bail for hanging.
On the reverse is the severed head of John the Baptist on a dish. Around his head is ‘St. Jean Baptiste’ and below the dish is the signature ‘Ruffony’. Around the edge is ‘Medaille de la Reconnaissance Diocesaine’ – so a recognition for some service to the Diocese’.
This very rare and special medal is in fine antique condition and will arrive in a gift box. Don’t miss it!
