This really lovely French medal is hallmarked for 800-900 quality silver. It is signed by the medallist, Tairac, who worked during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. I date this piece to circa 1920-1930.
The oval medal measures 1 and 1/16” (2.8cms) long, including the ring, by ¾” (2cms) across. It weighs 4.9 grams.
The medal celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes who appeared to St. Bernadette in the grotto. The image on the front of Our Lady is incredibly beautiful. She has her hands clasped in prayer as her rosary is wound around her wrist. She is surrounded by lilies and roses. Around the top is inscribed ‘Je Suis L’mmaculée Conception’ – I am the Immaculate Conception. The signature ‘Tairac’ appears at lower left.
At the top is a ring with the boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 quality silver. There is a bail for a chain.
On the reverse is the wondrous scene of Our Lady and Bernadette in the grotto. Below this is marked ‘Lourdes’.
This beautiful medal is in fine vintage condition and will arrive in a gift box.
