I believe that this charming, French, 18 carat gold filled, reliquary/locket necklace is new old stock from the early 20th century. It carries a glass plaque called ‘pâte de verre’ in French.
The chain is 20½” (54cms) long and closes with a ring clasp. The adjacent ring is marked ’plaqué or lamet’ with some further unreadable marks. ‘Plaqué’ is for gold filled or plated and I’m pretty sure that ‘lamet’ refers to laminated or rolled. There are other marks which I am unable to decipher.
The pendant measures 2 and 1/8” (5.3cms) by 1 and 1/8” (3cms).
The shiny gold frame is decorated with swirls and fleur de lis. There are little rings on either side but I am unsure about their purpose. Raised up above it is an oval with whitish blue opaque glass. In the centre is a lovely red cross.
The locket opens via a groove at top left. It lifts down from the top. The interior has a cavity for a memento and is in fine condition. It clicks back into place.
At the top is a ring and a bail which carries a maker’s mark.
This beautiful piece, in excellent condition, will arrive carefully presented in a gift box
