This stunning Victorian cross is either thickly 18 carat gold plated or made of pinchbeck. This is an alloy of copper and zinc which closely resembles gold. It was often used in Georgian and Victorian times when wearers feared the loss of precious metals. If plated it is in remarkably good condition for its age. There are some small signs of age only noticeable under high magnification.
The cross measures 3” (7.7cms) by 2” (5.1cms) across. Attached to the hole at the top is a bail for a chain. The cross weighs a very substantial 24.8 grams.
The raised design is the same on both sides. Exquisitely sculpted flowers, trailing stems and scrolls run down the arms of the cross. The edges are embellished with cross hatched half moons with little flowers between them.
This truly magnificent cross looks just like real gold . It is in excellent antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
