Here is a delightful, French silver medal or charm commemorating Saint Anne , the mother of Mary.I am dating it to circa 1900.
It measures 5/8” (1.5cms) across and weighs 2.3 grams.
On the front is a crowned image of St. Anne with the child, Mary also crowned. There is an artist;s signature on the left but it is hard to decipher. Around the edge is ‘St Anne D’Auray P.P.N (pray for us). St Anne D’Auray is a commune in Brittany, France where in the seventeenth century St Anne appeared to a peasant and told him where to find a lost statue of her. Since then it has become a place of pilgrimage.
At the top is a ring marked with the boar’s head French hallmark for 800-900 silver quality. There is a bail attached.
On the reverse is a very attractive, crowned stylised ‘A’ with palms and tiny fleur de lis in the background. A banner across it is marked ‘D’Auray’.
This exquisite piece is in fine antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
