This wonderful French cross is full of interest. It is silver plated but has all the appearance of solid silver.
It celebrates the movement of ‘Adoration et Réparation’ - Adoration and Reparation (sometimes translated as ‘Restorative Worship’. It was Théodelinde Dubouché (1809-1863) who founded the movement . She saw visions of Christ similar to the one depicted on the front of the cross. She later became a nun as ‘Mother Mary Thérèse of the Heart of Jesus’.
The cross is of medium size , measuring 2 and 1/16” (5.3cms) , including the ring, by 1 and 3/16” (3cms).
In the centre is a beautifully sculpted, raised image of the head of Christ with tears running down his face. Around him is a cloth believed to be St. Veronica’s Veil which drapes onto the reverse. On each arm of the cross is a different motif. At the top is a sunburst with a triangle . The triangle has writing, possibly Aramaic or Hebrew. On the left side is a sunburst with the pierced heart of Mary with tiny roses. On the right side is a sunburst with the pierced heart of Jesus. At the base is the Holy Chalice and the description ‘Penin Poncet Déposé (patented).
Adolphe Penin (1888-1985) came from a notable Lyons family of medallists. He worked in Lyons with Jean-Baptiste Poncet (1827-1901). Penin created the design and Poncet engraved it on the metal dies for stamping. There was a congregation of this organisation in Rome in 1884. So this helps us to date the cross although this may of course be a later copy. At the top of the cross is a ring and a bail for a chain.
On the reverse in raised lettering is ‘Adoration Réparatrice’ and ‘Des Nations Catholques Représentées à Rome’ – Of the Catholic Nations Represented in Rome.
In fine condition, this lovely cross will arrive in a gift box.
