This impressive mid Victorian cross is made of pinchbeck. This alloy of copper and zinc closely resembles gold and was often used in Georgian and Victorian times when wearers feared the loss of precious metals.
The cross measures 3” (7.8cms), including the ring, by 1 and 7/8” (4.8cms) across. Attached to the ring is a bail for a chain. The cross weighs a substantial 19.4 grams.
The raised design is the same on both sides. Exquisitely sculpted flowers and leaves adorn the arm ends, three of which are finished with a tiny ball. A further flower is at the centre and all along the arms are tiny flowers. Solid , faceted bars fill in the spaces and catch the light and the cross has a corded outline.
The top is in plain gold pinchbeck with a hole to carry the attached bail.
This lovely and very unusual cross looks just like real gold and I love the way it glitters It is in excellent antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
