This beautiful gold filled, French medal or charm features Saint Dyonesia or Denise. It is signed by Karo. I am dating this piece to approximately 1930-1950.
Saint Dyonesia of Alexandria was martyred at the age of 16. In the year 484, the Arian King, Huneric, banished the Catholic bishops from their African Sees, and began a violent persecution of orthodox Christians, many of whom were put to death. Saint Dyonesia of Alexandria, a woman of exceptional piety, was martyred at the age of 16 as was her young son.
The medal measures 9/16” (1.5cms) across.
The raised image of Saint Dyonesia shows that she is young and beautiful. She is holding the martyr’s palm. To the right is the signature ‘Karo’. Around the edge in raised lettering is 'Sancta Dyonesia PPN' (Pray for us).
At the top is a ring and a bail. The back is blank apart from a maker's mark.
This charming piece is in fine vintage condition and will arrive in a gift box.
