This impressive, Victorian cross and collar is made of Vulcanite, This is a substance formed of vulcanising india rubber with sulphur. It was a good substitute for the more expensive Whitby jet. This was probably a mourning piece.
The collar measures 19" (49cms) long. The graduated links are between 20mms and 13mms wide.
Each hexagonal link has fine patterning. The two ends are attached to a round link in the centre. The collar closes with a black metal hook.
The round link is attached to two smaller ones to form a drop with the cross. It is 4¼” (10.5cms) long. The width across the cross is 2½” (6.5cms).
The arms of the cross are attractively pierced. It has a diamond shape with fine lines radiating outwards. In the centre is a pierced cross. The design is the same on both sides.
This truly wonderful piece of Victoriana is in excellent antique condition and will arrive carefully presented in a gift box.
