This delightful French antique 18K rose gold filled cross dates to the nineteenth century circa 1880. This type of cross is called the ‘Jeannette’ cross . The name is derived from hiring servant girls on St. John’s Day (24th June) who bought this type of cross with their first earnings. It is accompanied by a gold filled chain.
The quite substantial chain is 15” (38cms) long and closes with a ring clasp.
The cross measures 1½” (3.8cms) long by 1 and 1/16” (2.6cms).
The cross in soft rose gold is highly decorative on each side. The centre has a diamond shape with an exquisite flower. At the end of each arm is a delicate foliate decoration. Each of three arms are delicately engraved to catch the light and finished with golden balls.
At the top is a prettily shaped finial with a hole. There is a maker’s marks on one side. This is for the famous Parisian jeweller, Savard.
A bail for a chain is attached.
The back is similarly embellished to the front.
This exquisite and very beautiful cross is in fine antique condition with a lovely chain. It will arrive in a gift box.
