This exquisite, and very rare, small medal or charm is signed by the celebrated French engraver, Emile Dropsy (1858-1923). It is hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality. It commemorates the visitation of the angel Gabriel to The Virgin Mary. (The Annunciation). This image appears on a thirteenth century statue on the front of Reims cathedral in France. The smiling angel, not represented here, is a national icon.
The medal measures 11/16” (1.7cms) across. It weighs 3.1 grams.
The Virgin Mary is finely sculpted with features delicately delineated. Behind her are pillars. Present on the lower right side is the signature ‘E.D’ for Emile Dropsy. At the top is a ring and a bail to hold a chain. The ring bears the boar’s head hallmark.
On the reverse is a fine image of the cathedral. Above this is the inscription ‘Vierge De La Visitation’ – Virgin of the Visitation Reims.
