This truly lovely cross and chain dates to the Art Deco period. The cross is marked for 830 silver and is set with haematite stones and marcasites. Although it arrived from a French source I believe that it may be German in origin. The accompanying chain tests to 800-900 silver quality. The rather worn hallmark on the ring appears to be a French crab.
The chain measures 17” (44cms) long and closes with a ring clasp. Together with the cross it weighs 8.1 grams.
The cross measures 2 and 3/16” (5.5cms) long, including the bail, and 1 and 3/8” (3.5cms) across.
At the top the triangular shaped bail is set with a single glittering marcasite. It is attached to a small ring at the top of the cross. The cross is set with gleaming, charcoal grey haematite stones, carved into elongated , geometric shapes. Tiny claws hold the stones in place. There is a central quartered square set with marcasites. The pointed ends of the cross are also embellished with marcasites.
The back is smoothly finished and the back of the bail is marked ‘830’. On the ring is an insect mark indicative of a French import.
In excellent vintage condition, this beautiful cross and chain will arrive in a gift box.
