This is a very rare and lovely French Victorian crucifix . It is made of mother of pearl and 800-900 silver quality.
This reasonably large crucifix measures 2¾” (7cms) long, including the ring, by 2” (5.2cms) across. The mother of pearl is 3mms thick.
On a base of wondrously lustrous mother of pearl is a delicately and realistically sculpted Christ figure. Each side of the cross is ornamented a pretty scrolling motif. There is a little silver scroll with the word ‘INRI’.
The crucifix ends have roundels carrying the faces in profile of Jesus and Mary. The reverse is remarkable because it also carries the same roundels with, of course, a plain mother of pearl centre.
At the top is a ring and a bail to hold a chain. The ring bears a French hallmark which is the crab mark for 800-900 silver quality.
This truly beautiful and quite exceptional crucifix has a lovely soft patina which contrasts beautifully with the lustrous mother of pearl. It is in excellent antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
