I believe that this pretty micro mosaic cross dates to circa 1910. It was made in Italy where this type of item, composed of tesserae or tiles, was sold to tourists as a souvenir of the Grand Tour.
The cross measures 1½” (4cms) long including the ring and 1” (2.5cms) across. It is mounted on brass with the remnants of a gilt finish.
The pattern on the front is very colourful. In the centre is a roundel with a posy of pink flowers. All around it are curves of vibrant red, green ant turquoise, accented with feathery white tiles. At each arm end are tiny decorative tiles.
The back is plain.. At the top is a ring and a bail.
I have examined the micro mosaic tiles very carefully with a loupe and all I could find was a tiny area of movement or a missing tile on the white area right at the top. It is really not noticeable to the naked eye. Apart from that it is in lovely antique condition and comes to you tissue wrapped in a gift box.
