I believe that this beautiful French silver and crystal glass rosary dates to circa 1900. It bears French boar’s head hallmarks for 800-900 quality silver and I have tested the chain to the same quality.
The rosary measures 30" (77cms) around with a further drop of 7½" (19.5cms), including the cross. It weighs 81.8 grams.
The rosary has delicate, clear crystal glass beads, faceted to catch the light. They measure 8-10mms across. They are connected by small lengths of silver chain. At the base is a really delicate silver Marial medal which is an `M ‘for Mary. It bears a tiny boar's head French hallmark on the bottom ring.
The drop is composed of silver chain and more glass beads. It is finished with a crucifix 1 ¾” (4.5cms) long. The background is strewn with the fleur de lis of France and the back is blank. The ring at the top carries the boar's head.
On very close inspection you will see that there is a problem with the Christ figure. These are always applied separately and this one cam adrift and was reapplied securely. Unfortunately somewhere along the way a break occurred on Christ’s knees. The crucifix is still beautiful and somehow the break conveys more of the suffering of Christ. There is also a repair at the end of the chain attaching to the crucifix. The remainder is in excellent, antique condition.
Because of the above I have reduced my pricing on this rosary. It will arrive in a gift box.
