This lovely French Pin is made of solid 800-900 silver. It celebrates Our Lady of Boulogne.
According to legend, in about 633, an unmanned boat carrying a luminous statue of the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus was sighted in the estuary at Boulogne. The statue was carried to the church and soon miracles were reported at the site. Between the 13th and 16th century the statue, known as Notre-Dame de la Mer ("Our Lady of the Sea") became a popular object of pilgrimage, bringing ongoing prosperity to the town.
The pin measures 1 and 3/16” (3cms) across and weighs 9.2 grams.
There is a wonderful dimensional image of the boat and the Virgin and Child within. The background is delicately textured. Around the edge in bold lettering is ‘ N D de Boulogne P.P.N. (Our Lady of Boulogne Pray For Us. The signature off the artist is at lower left – ‘G Chobillon’.
On the back is a quite secure , old style c clip.
