This distinctive French silver Communion medal dates to 1886.
It measures 1 and 1/8” (2.8cms) across by 1 and 5/16” (3.8cms) including the ring. It weighs 2.7 grams. It is thin and quite light as they were at this period.
The medal has a lovely gothic style shape. The scene is a church with the altar and pillars in the background. There are two priests, one of whom holds the Communion Chalice. There are a number of people in the congregations and two of them appear to be holding a canopy. Around the edge is the inscription ‘Souvenir de Première Communion’ – Souvenir of First Communion.
At the top is a ring which bears the French crab mark for 800-900 silver. A bail is attached for a chain.
Around the edge of the reverse is a floral garland. It is inscribed ‘JP’ and the dates ‘24Juin 1 Juillet 1886’.
This medal was certainly cleaned before I acquired it so it presents in excellent antique condition with only slight signs of age. It will arrive in a gift box.
