This beautiful, double sided French medal celebrates Our Lady of Fourvière. It carries a French hallmark for 800-900 silver quality. It is signed ‘Penin Poncet’. I am dating this medal to circa 1900-1910.
Adolphe Penin (1888-1985) came from a notable Lyons family of medallists. During the early 20th century he worked in Lyons with Jean-Baptiste Poncet. Penin created the design and Poncet engraved it on the metal dies for stamping.
Fourvière in the Lyons area of France has always been a popular place of pilgrimage. There has been a shrine at Fourvière dedicated to Our Lady since 1170. The chapel and parts of the building have been rebuilt at different times over the centuries. The present magnificent basilica was built in the second half of the nineteenth century .
The medal measures 13/16” (2.1cms) across and weighs 4.5 grams.
On one side is a fine, raised image of Mary and the Child Jesus. Around the edge in attractive raised lettering is ‘N.D de Fourviere Priez Pour Nous’ – Our Lady of Fourviere pray for us.
On the ring at the top is the French crab hallmark for 800-900 silver quality and a maker's mark. There is a bail to hold a chain.
On the reverse is an exquisitely sculpted image of the basilica. In front of it is a statue of a lion.
This very rare medal is in fine condition. It will arrive in a gift box,
