This is delightful, Danish crucifix tests as 800-900 silver quality. It appears to be marked ‘830S’ on the bail, although this is very indistinct.
It measures 1 and 7/8” (4.7cms) long, including the ring by 1 and 3/8” (3.5cms) across. It weighs 7.5 grams.
On the front of the crucifix is an engraved representation of Christ on the cross.. It is a copy of a Cross
found in the tomb of Queen Margaret of Denmark (nicknamed"Dagmar"). Queen Dagmar died in the 13th Century AD. This
Byzantine Cross is believed to have been a gift to her from her father, the King of Bohemia. Copies of the cross are extremely popular in Denmark and in England from the end of the 19th century when Princess Alexandra of Denmark married the future King Edward V11.
On the highly decorated back are roundels with the image of Jesus in the centre, the Virgin Mary on the left and three other apostles or saints.
At the top is a ring and a substantial bail. It is marked and described above.
This beautiful and unusual piece is in fine vintage condition. It will arrive in a gift box.
