This beautiful French religious medal is a tribute to Motherhood. It is made of silvered metal and dates to circa 1880-1900.
The medal measures 1 ½" (3.7cms), including the ring, by 1" (2.5cms) across. It weighs 10.2grams so is quite substantial.
On the front is a raised image of the Virgin Mary with hands outstretched. Her robes are beautifully sculpted. She is shown crushing a snake (representing evil) beneath her feet as she stands on the globe. Around the edge is the inscription in Latin ` Monstra Te Esse Matrem' – Show Yourself as a Mother.
On the reverse is a spray of lilies and a radiating star. Beneath this is a plaque blank for initials Around the edge is the inscription in French `Congregation Des Enfants de Marie' – Congregation of the Children of Mary. (A religious association).
There is a solid ring at the top and a bail to hold a chain.
This really beautiful piece has a soft patina of age. It will arrive in a gift box.
