This beautiful French religious medal is a tribute to Motherhood. It is hallmarked for 800 -900 silver quality. It dates to 1884.
The medal measures 1 ½" (3.7cms), including the ring, by 1 and 1/8" (2.8cms) across. It weighs 5.5 grams. It is quite thin in common with many French medals of this period but is still sturdy.
On the front is a raised image of the Virgin Mary with hands outstretched. Her robes are beautifully sculpted. She is shown crushing a serpent (representing evil) beneath her feet. Around the edge is the inscription in Latin ` Monstra Te Esse Matrem' – Show Yourself as a Mother.
On the reverse is a spray of lilies and a radiating star. Beneath this is a plaque with initials and the date 16 juillet 1884. Around the edge is the inscription in French `Congregation Des Enfants de Marie' – Congregation of the Children of Mary. (A religious association).
There is a solid ring at the top which bears the French boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 silver. There is also a bail to hold a chain.
This really beautiful piece has been cleaned because it was quite black. It will soon regain an attractive patina. It will arrive in a gift box.
