This charming, French Communion medal is signed ‘Piel’. Whether this is the famous Piel Brothers of Paris I don’t know. It is hallmarked for 800-900 silver quality. I am dating it to circa 1900.
The delicately scalloped medal measures 13/16” (2.1cms) across and weighs 8.9 grams, quite heavy for its size.
On the front is an image of Jesus and the beloved disciple at the Communion table. The background is gold washed and strewn with fleur de lis. Around the edge is the inscription in Latin ‘Ecce Panis Angelorum’ – Behold the bread of angels. Beneath the table is the signature ‘Piel’.
At the top is a ring with the boar’s head hallmark for 800-900 silver quality. There is a bail attached.
On the reverse is a raised image of the Communion Chalice with sprays of lilies on a gold washed background.
This delightful and quite rare medal retains the natural patina of age. It will arrive in a gift box,
