MUSTANG OR PONY SIZED, hand made antique bridle bit, possibly Mexican, Native American Navajo or Apache. Bit has copper reinforcing, iron is beautifully aged and pitted, narrow silver bands have been inlaid top to bottom on each shank. The bit came in a box of old horse tack out of an estate in southern Oklahoma, in the group was ring bits, pieces of old Mexican saddles and one fairly complete, well used Mexican saddle. This small bit is a very interesting piece, size is unusual.
CONDITION: Mouthpiece or port is missing possibly a roller, something has been there, now gone. The right side is missing a copper dome to cover the rivet. Bit has a slight bend to it, port, bridle and rein holes have all seen tremendous use and have obvious wear marks.
SIZE: Cheek or shank, top to bottom: 6 1/2", Width at cheeks: 4 1/2", Width at shanks: 3 1/2"
I believe the bit to be from the late 1800's if not earlier.
