ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN SOUTHWESTERN INDIAN PIMA TRIBAL hand woven basketry bowl or tray. This beautiful, naturally aged basket features a large center black circle with four radiating points (4 directions?) which begin to form 8 individual black lines that circle the basket and end in 4 black triangles around the edge of the basket. Often this design has been called a "blossom". The basket has aged to a rich, mellow brown which contrasts with the dark black center and radiating lines. The basket is constructed of local southwest native grasses and local Devil's Claw (the black on the basket is native Devil's Claw). Many of the designs used by the Pima tribe have to do with their emergence from the earth in their beginning.
SIZE: 10 3/4" Diameter by 2 3/4" Tall
CONDITION: Good, there are two small breaks on the rim (see photos). Basket has been used and handled throughout its life and there are traces of dirt (?) packed in some of the coils. The basket has a slight oily feel to it from years of use. Nothing unnatural has been done to the basket's surface, it is all just age and use. Basket is soft, not dry and brittle. If you love holding a truly unique piece of a tribal culture and wishing it could tell you its life story, this is a basket for your collection. There is an old cloth sticker on the bottom that says: "635", and then there is a small string tag attached that says: DF 635 on one side and HVB41 on the other. Possibly museum or personal collection information. The rim is traditionally tightly braided and the whole basket is very tightly woven and done in very small stitches.
SPECIAL NOTE: The basket was photographed on a black background so when Ruby Lane processed the photo to a lighter background you will see traces of the black around the woven edge. Thought that was a little confusing even for me! Thanks!
CIRCA: Late 1800's to very early 1900's. This basket was purchased in Arizona in 1993 and has been a treasured part of our collection.
We love baskets and will pack it very carefully, usually we over pack in size and quite often double box baskets.
