BEAUTIFUL LIDDED, TIGHTLY WOVEN, STRONG HANDLED BASKET woven on the South Pacific Island of Papau New Guinea. This basket is so beautiful in color, design and shape. These baskets are collected the world over! This one is a work of art, featuring 3 rows of dark brown triangles with the bottom row becoming a star on the bottom of the basket. The tight fitting lid has an eight point star done in the same dark brown along with a woven top knob. The strong woven braided and inset handle is a piece of work by itself! Tightly braided with multi contrasting strands of the basket material it is tall enough to be carried on your arm. Many people say they are constructed of grass, but when we were in PNG I was shown two jungle ferns that were used in their construction. So, I honestly don't know, but I did see the women gathering the large ferns and working them into strips. The dark brown on this basket is a natural dye from plants.
CONDITION: Great, no fading or damage other than the woven chain on the lid (I went ahead and showed it in the photographs) broke, you can see it was fragile, evidently my grandson couldn't and pulled on it. I will see if I can figure a way to put it on where it doesn't look bad, if I can't it will be tucked inside the basket. My price will reflect this damage. Basket is clean, no stains or smells.
