NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE MOCCASINS MADE BY THE SLAVE TRIBE OF THE YUKON TERRITORY. The moccasins are made of native smoked moose, cut with a rounded toe, have a welt between upper and soft hide sole, and have matching leather ankle wraps and thongs. The heel seam is done in a "T". The beautiful thread sewn venetian beadwork features a 5 point sharp petal flower centered on each toe with vines and leafs wrapping around each side ending with sharp pointed petals. The top of the vamp has a black and red colored rounded edge petal flower on a white beaded background. There are 3 rows of 2 quill, diagonal quillwork alternating of ivory and red, a center row of red and blue quillwork, and then another row of ivory and red quillwork. The quillwork rows are divided by clear crystal beads and the last row is outlined by a single row of greasy yellow beads. Other bead colors are opaque black, pumpkin or light orange, light blue, medium blue and black metal cut beads.
This is a beautiful and showy pair of moccasins in almost perfect condition. The quillwork shows the most age, it has faded and suffers some bug damage. My thoughts are the moccasins have maybe been worn once and then put on display. All beadwork is original and intact. If you want a beautiful, real pair of Native American moccasins to wear, these have years left in them. They are soft and wearable.
I love subarctic material, but I have not been fortunate enough to handle or be exposed to very many items from this area. If you believe the moccasins to be made by another tribe, I am 99% sure you would be correct. The deciding characteristics I used to identify are: Most tribes in this region use rounded petals on their flowers, the maker of this pair used both sharp and rounded.
The maker used a different color bead on the sharp point of the prominent flower. The use of 2 color quill work down diagonally around the vamp.
