LARGE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN MAT BOARD PHOTOGRAPH OF IDENTIFIED Penobscot, Peter Nicola, Chief of Oldtown, Indian Tribe. This is an outstanding original brown tone photograph showing identified Peter Nicola, along with another man standing behind a large birch bark canoe with animal hides laid across the canoe along with animal heads, snow shoes, birch bark baskets, bows, clubs, rifle cases, antlers, stick ball nets, and canoe paddles. Both men are dressed in traditional clothing. Period handwriting on the back of the mat identifies "Peter Nicola". Lower, front right corner of mat has studio stamp: "Smith Photo Pan or Ran", sadly that is the torn corner.

The Penobscot are part of the Wabanake Confederacy along with the Abernaki, Passamaquaddy, Malisiet and Mi'knaq nations. The Penobscot Indian Island Reservation is within the state of Maine along the Penobscot River. The tribal affiliation extends into Quebec.

SIZE: Board: 12" Wide by 10" High Image: 9 1/4" Wide by 7" High

CONDITION: The image is lightly faded but still has good contrast and the photo edges are in great condition. The mat board has had a hard life, I have attempted to show the problems in the photographs. The good news is none of the boards creases or damages affects the image portion of the photograph.

Thank you for your interest! We will pack the photo carefully, possibly in a box due to the weakness of the mat.
