NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN southern plains man's leather and fringed leggings with beadwork. Soft native tanned hide with overall hand rubbed dull yellow ochre paint covering both front and back of the leggings. There is also a much faded brownish red paint between the bottom beaded bands, around the bottom edges and along the edges front and back on the fringe line. There is also a very fine faded red line along the legging tie line. All paint is original and is the old powder type that was mixed with grease and applied by hand. Bead work is sinew sewn in early, tiny, old seed beads that have a cut only on one side. The bead colors consist of Italian white, black, light blue and dark ruby red. Each legging is edge beaded around the bottom with matching black beads. All beading has made an impression on the back side. Original foot ties are still attached. The leather waist ties have long ago been replaced with cotton ties. The beautiful staggered hand cut fringe is present and soft. If you want a "real" pair of leggings that were out on the plains with a real warrior, these are for you. They could tell us a lot of great stories if they could only talk!! They look fantastic hung with tacked guns, clubs and pipes. You know, Indian war stuff!
CONDITION: Amazingly they are in pretty good shape! They are most fragile at the top where an old piece of army issue stroud cloth with a saved list could be hung as a loin cloth. There is a leather replacement inset on the top of the right legging. Several wear holes, (no, not bullet holes), most of the leg ties are still present, 90% of the beading is present, the beading is strong and deeply embedded into the leather. Fringe shows soiling along the lower edges. There are sweat stains from probably both human and horse on the upper portion of the leggings. The leggings were collected from the Apache, so I imagine there were some very warm days in their history. What can I say, "used" but so intriguing and 100% honest, untouched with honest wear.
SIZE: LENGTH OF EACH LEGGING: 29 1/2" plus 12" for waist tie on right and plus 8 1/2" waist tie on left. WIDTH: 10" plus 4" to 8" fringe along outside edges.
CIRCA: 1870'S to 1890's
