BEAUTIFULLY MATCHED ANTIQUE pair of Native American Indian man's legging strips. Native hide (buffalo ?) backing with sinew, hand sewn and hand beaded 5 lanes of lazy stitch, classic strips that appear to be in near perfect condition! Beautiful sharp and contrasting colors were chosen and include the following: opaque Italian white, rosy red white hearts, royal blue, Arapaho green, and a slightly greasy looking steel blue, plus the addition of translucent dark bottle green. This beautiful pair of men's legging strips would have originally been sewn on wool or leather leggings. The edges of the hide shows the original stitching spacing holes that were used for this sewing. The strips are classic Lakota or Sioux, however, they came from a Cheyenne family in Oklahoma and have been with us for over 30 years. They were not on leggings when we purchased.
CONDITION: Excellent! I don't see any damage or repairs. The white beads are showing a light gray blue tint that happens with age and there is a slight sign of dirt between the beads. The deep green beads have deepened in color which is another sign of age. The hide shows soiling and "fuzziness" on the back (as it should if it was on leather or wool leggings). The bead rows are embedded into the leather and can be viewed in the photograph of the back of the strips. They are absolutely strong enough to be sewn on leggings for display or dancing.
CIRCA: Late 1800's, possibly early 1900's
SIZE: LENGTH: 30 1/4" WIDTH: 2 3/4"
