NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN, Lakota (Sioux) or Cheyenne extra long, tightly round sinew beaded, woman's awl case with bone awl. This beautiful hand beaded awl case has a long beaded, flop over, lightly fringed red ochred flap with a pair of small (3/4") tin cones and a pair of matching red ochred leather drops. The case itself is native hide covering a tapered rolled piece of rawhide. The case, flap and bottom round drop are all beaded in alternating lines and rows of classic plains Italian bead colors. The bead colors consist of: opaque greasy yellow, dark royal blue, Sioux light blue, Arapaho green, and tiny rosy white hearts. There are 4 3/4" tin cones at the bottom of the drop along with 2 10 3/4" irregular red and yellow ochred native leather strips with split ends. This awl and case would have traditionally hung by the two tied together leather tabs at the top on a woman's belt. There are 8 matching 1/4" brass beads decorating the top ties. The bone awl inside the case shows "handling" and wear patina in two places. It has a broken tip and several chips. The awl is 4 3/4" in length.
CONDITION: All good, some soiling on the long leather drops and on the belt tie tabs. All the beading is tight and strong, I don't see any missing beads. The interior rawhide liner shows soiling from an awl being slid in and out. The case is beautiful and still strong enough to be tied on a woman's belt and used for dancing or regalia accessorizing, or, of course, hang on your wall with your collection!
CIRCA: Early to pre- mid 1900's
SIZE: Length: 27" tip to tip, Case and beaded drop is 11 1/2". Widest Diameter is 2 1/2"
SPECIAL NOTE: While the bone awl was in the case when we purchased, I do not believe it is the correct or original awl for the case.
