This wonderful deeply carved bakelite bracelet is from my personal collection. I have enjoyed it for many years and now since I am trying to downsize, it's time to give someone else a chance to enjoy it. Bakelite is a type of early plastic, namely a thermosetting phenolic resin. It was founded by a Belgian born chemist in 1909 in NY. It became very popular because of its qualities such as being extremely hard, easily molded and resistant to heat. It was used for electrical insulators, toys, firearms, kitchenware as well as jewelry. The jewelry remains very popular and collectible. This particular bracelet is very special because it is so deeply carved. This is an attribute highly prized by collectors and of course, it enhances the beauty of the bracelet. There is a pattern of flowers (roses) and extra large leaves (palm leaves?) which repeats itself twice around the bracelet. The pattern is the result of excellent precision carving and the lines go deeply into the plastic. The carvings cover the entire surface of the piece. There are a lot of highs and lows to this carving with some spots on the bracelet being much higher than other spots. This is called depth and dimension. Feeling it with your fingers is a pleasure and adds to the appreciation of the fine craftsman who produced this piece. THe color is a warm and wonderful butterscotch. It is not completely opaque since you can see light coming through at the edges. Another interesting accent to this bracelet. The top is domed and the underside is flat. It tests positive for bakelite. It measures 2 3/8" inner diameter, and 15/16 wide. inner circumference almost 7 1/2". The piece is in great condition without any chips or other problems. THis bracelet is a winner......I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!!! Condition: Excellent VINTAGE Condition
