A question: Do two cherubs count towards the total number of guests that can attend a small gathering? Even though many of us believe that there are cherubs hovering around all the time in an invisible manner, these two are visible on this lovely handbag from the 1930's (probably French). It is especially reassuring in these difficult time to have the protection of cherubs. The purse is slender and horizontal. It is differently shaped. There's a flap on the front. It is covered with a very high end leather that is soft even though it is of the stiff kind. The leather has some crackling and veining which is very fitting as it adds to the wonderful patina of the bag. The color is black although at times, it appears to be the darkest brown ever seen. It is the antiqued gold medallion that take's center stage. The medallion is large measuring 2" x 2". It is circular and done in relief. There are two cherubs, a male and a female engaged in an embrace. They are very detailed and very dimensional. The feeling that is conveyed is that of "love." Just beautiful and magical. The back has a wrist handle to carry the bag. There is a faux scalloped detail also on the back indicating a bag that was well thought out and adorned with extras that were ordinarily not necessary. The bag opens when the medallion is lifted upwards. The inside is lined with a brown moire fabric and there are 2 open pockets. There isn't any indication of maker but I would guess the excellence of the bag is indicative of the French. The inside has signs of use but nothing significant. The measurements are 12"w x 6"h x 1"d. The purse is in great condition. There are a few minuscule indications of age and usage, but considering its age, it is in great shape. (Remember the camera significantly exaggerates every blemish etc.) It has a wonderful patina that only comes with age.
I think these 2 cherubs would be very welcome at any small gathering, seen or unseen! Condition: Excellent - VINTAGE Condition
